Illinoisยท Answer
Must a Illinois landlord provide an itemized statement of deductions?
Short answer
Yes. If the landlord withholds any portion of the deposit, Illinois requires a written itemized statement listing each deduction and its amount within 30 days of move-out, under 765 ILCS 710. If the landlord provides an itemized statement within 30 days, balance must be returned within 15 more days If no itemized statement, the full deposit must be returned within 45 days

Honest limits
This is an informational answer based on 765 ILCS 710 as of early 2026. It is not legal advice. Housing law changes year to year and local ordinances (especially in rent-controlled or rent-stabilized cities) can override or add to state law. For contested cases, consult a Illinois-licensed attorney.
