How many days pay-or-quit notice does Illinois require?
Illinois requires 5 days for pay-or-quit under 735 ILCS 5/9-209, 10 days for violations under 5/9-210. The notice period starts the day after service. The notice must be written and include the amount of rent due, the deadline, the property address, and the landlord's signature. Serving by personal delivery, certified mail, or posting (where state law allows) counts as valid service. An incorrectly drafted or served notice voids the subsequent eviction.

This is an informational answer based on Illinois eviction statute as of early 2026. It is not legal advice. Housing law changes year to year and local ordinances (especially in rent-controlled or rent-stabilized cities) can override or add to state law. For contested cases, consult a Illinois-licensed attorney.
