How long does a North Carolina landlord have to return the security deposit?

Short answer

North Carolina requires the deposit to be returned within 60 days of move-out, or 30 days if returning the full amount with no deductions, under NCGS 42-52. An itemized statement of any deductions must be delivered within the same window. Forfeiture of the right to withhold any portion of the deposit if the landlord fails to comply with NCGS 42-52.
