Does a Ohio lease automatically renew?
Only if the lease explicitly says so. By default, when a fixed-term Ohio lease ends, it does not auto-renew; the tenant either signs a new lease, vacates, or stays as a holdover (usually converting to a month-to-month tenancy under state default rules). An auto-renewal clause can be enforceable in Ohio if it specifies the renewal term and rent and the tenant has a right to opt out with notice. Many Ohio courts strictly construe auto-renewal clauses against the landlord because they shift the burden to the tenant.

This is an informational answer based on Ohio lease law as of early 2026. It is not legal advice. Housing law changes year to year and local ordinances (especially in rent-controlled or rent-stabilized cities) can override or add to state law. For contested cases, consult a Ohio-licensed attorney.
